IEEE student and graduate student members renewing or joining for the 2013 membership year will have to start checking e-mail—not postal mail—for their monthly issues of IEEE Spectrum and quarterly issues of The Institute.

That’s because starting next year students are being switched from print to digital delivery. Students wanting to continue a print subscription of the two publications will have to pay additional membership dues of US $5. Or they can subscribe to both print and digital delivery of IEEE Spectrum’s monthly print issues and The Institute’s quarterly print issues for $14.95 more per year.

“This change is a sign of the times,” according to John Day, director of IEEE Membership Development, in Piscataway, N.J.

“The switch to digital is designed to serve a rapidly growing student membership that is increasingly accessing most information on the Internet with tablets or mobile devices,” Day says.

“In addition to saving paper, the move to digital delivery ensures that all students will receive copies of IEEE Spectrum and The Institute on time, even if they live in parts of the world where postal delivery is unreliable,” Day continues.

Students will receive an e-mail alert each month providing links to Web browser- based or PDF-downloadable versions of the current month’s IEEE Spectrum and links to quarterly digital issues of The Institute in March, June, September, and December.

Within the PDF, navigation bars or embedded links can be used to move through the pages or visit linked content.  Readers can also zoom in and out of a page.

With the browser, individual pages can be bookmarked and articles can be shared on Facebook and Twitter or via e-mail. Links are embedded in the articles, so there’s no need to copy and paste URLs. Readers can search for keywords in the issue as well as access an archive of all issues of IEEE Spectrum and The Institute dating back to July 2007.

Student digital subscribers may also read their digital version of IEEE Spectrum on their iPad, Android, or Kindle Fire tablets.

As a reminder, The Institute is updated weekly online and IEEE Spectrum online is updated daily with original content and interactive features.
