Organizing the System

I was interested to read about electronic publications and IEEE eXpress Conference Publishing in "Conference Publishing Service Speeds Up the Heavy Lifting" [October 2008]. However, I was surprised at the impression the article gave that the department has moved only recently to electronic publishing. IEEE eXpress Conference Publishing has been at the cutting edge of publishing innovation for many years.

The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society has used its PDF eXpress service for eight years, and I had the pleasure of serving as the Publications Chair for the 2004 International Semantic Web Conference, the first conference to use PDF eXpress. Its eCopyright system and data extraction services significantly reduce the workload on conference authors and volunteers. Timely publication of conference material is extremely important to authors. Having worked with a number of publishers over the years, I know how innovative IEEE is with conference publications. Our leadership in electronics is well known, but we also need to recognize that IEEE is at the forefront of publishing technical information in all its forms.

It was not our intent to imply that the IEEE eXpress Conference Publishing had only recently embraced electronic publishing. The article stated that the department has been in existence since 1984 but had recently changed its name to call attention to the group’s two main services: PDF eXpress and Conference eXpress. We apologize for any misunderstanding the article may have caused—Ed.
