Videotape Recorder an Essential Invention

It was good to see television recognized with two IEEE Milestones in Electrical Engineering and Computing [“Television Earns Pair of IEEE Milestones,” November]. However, it seems to me that the invention of the Ampex VRX-1000, the first practical videotape recorder, invented in 1956, was more significant for the enjoyment of television than the TV relays mentioned in the article.
