Do Tablet Newspapers Have a Shot?

Less than two years after launch, a tablet-only newspaper is folding

News Corp. announced in December it was folding its newspaper, The Daily, which it launched in February 2011. The world’s first tablet-only newspaper, The Daily cost US $0.99 a week on the iPad and $1.99 to $3.99 per month on other tablet computers. In its announcement, News Corp. said it could not find “a large enough audience quickly enough to convince us the business model was sustainable.” Although there are other tablet-only newspapers, such as South Africa’s daily iMaverick, most newspapers’ tablet versions appear in addition to their online or print publications. Some of those tablet versions have struggled as well, including The Huffington Post, which launched a subscriber iPad-only publication last year but made it free after only five issues.
