Eighteen IEEE members are among the 77 engineers inducted into the U.S. National Academy of Engineering as members or foreign associates. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, education, and literature.

The new NAE members are:

Member David D. Awschalom of the California NanoSystems Institute, the University of California, Santa Barbara; Member James J. Collins of the Center for BioDynamics, Boston University; Member Daniel C. Edelstein of IBM, Yorktown Heights, N.Y.; Senior Member Mark S. Humayan of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles; Life Fellow Linos J. Jacovides, now retired, from Delphi Research Labs, Gross Pointe Farms, Mich.; Fellow Mark J. Kushner of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; Fellow Fred C. Lee of Virginia Tech; Fellow Henry M. Levy of the University of Washington, Seattle; Fellow Asad M. Madni, now retired, from BEI Technologies, Los Angeles; Fellow Jitendra Malik, the University of California, Berkeley; Fellow Nicholas W. McKeown of Stanford University; Life Senior Member Richard B. Miles of Princeton University; Associate Member Ramamoorthy Ramesh of the University of California, Berkeley; Life Fellow Aristides A.G. Requicha of the University of Southern California; Fellow John A. Rogers of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; Fellow Fred B. Schneider of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.; Fellow Terrence J. Sejnowski of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, La Jolla, Calif.; and Fellow Jonathan Scott Rose of the University of Toronto.

IEEE Fellow Eric Grimson was named chancellor of MIT, where he has been a professor of electrical engineering since 1984. In his new role, Grimson oversees the institute’s Office of the Dean for Undergraduate Education, the Office of the Dean for Graduate Education, and the Division of Student Life.

Over the years, he has held several leadership positions at MIT, including chair of the institute’s department of electrical engineering and computer science. He is head of the computer vision group of MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, which develops systems for behavior recognition, object and person recognition, image database indexing, image-guided surgery, site modeling, and other areas of computer vision.

Grimson is a member of the IEEE Computer Society.

Andrzej Jajszczyk, an IEEE Fellow, was appointed the first executive director of Poland’s National Science Center, a new government agency based in Kraków that provides funding for scientific research.

Jajszczyk is a professor at AGH University of Science and Technology, also in Kraków, where his research focuses on network reliability and control plane architectures for transport networks.

He is a member of the IEEE Communications Society and director of the society’s magazines. He is also the founding editor of IEEE Global Communications Newsletter, editor of IEEE Transactions on Communications, and editor in chief of IEEE Communications Magazine.

The Anita Borg Institute of Women and Technology presented IEEE Fellow Karen Panetta with a Women of Vision Award in the social impact category. She was recognized for her contributions to academia and industry, as well as for creating Nerd Girls, an outreach program aimed at steering young women toward science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines.

Panetta is a professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of the Simulation Research Laboratory at Tufts University in Medford, Mass.

She is a member of the IEEE Computer; Education; Robotics and Automation; Signal Processing; and Systems, Man and Cybernetics societies. She is also a member of IEEE Women in Engineering and chair of the IEEE Boston Section, founder and editor in chief of IEEE Women in Engineering Magazine, and editor of Reflector, the newspaper of the IEEE Boston Section.

Senior Member Sam Sciacca has been named vice president of global sales at Subnet, a software company with headquarters in Calgary, Alta., Canada, that specializes in networking and substation technology for power grids. He is responsible for developing sales strategies and expanding the company’s sales representative network.

Before joining the organization, Sciacca was CEO of CG Automation, a company in Seymour, Conn., that manufactures real-time automation and utility information systems.

He serves on the IEEE Standards board of directors, where he has helped generate several IEEE and International Electrotechnical Commission standards related to utility automation, and has contributed to panel sessions, tutorials, and technical publications on the technology. He is a member of the IEEE Power & Energy Society.
