Standards That Advance Transportation Electrification

Covering applications that help upgrade the industry

The IEEE Standards Association has introduced a number of standards for transportation electrification, with others in the works.

IEEE 1482.1-2013
Approved December 2013
The “IEEE Standard for Rail Transit Vehicle Event Recorders” covers onboard devices and systems with crash-safe memory that records data to support accident and incident analysis for rail transit vehicles. Its specifications are limited to event recorder functions and interfaces, exclude data transmission methods, and are independent of the hardware and software employed in other vehicular systems. Diagnostic features and self-test options are described, as well as functions, parameters, signals, systems, and subsystems.

IEEE 1629-2013
Approved May 2013
The “IEEE Standard for Performance of DC Overhead Current Collectors for Transit Vehicles” provides the minimum acceptable performance requirements for overhead current collectors used for light and heavy rail vehicles and trolley buses. Areas addressed include the oscillation of collectors, all-weather operation, the wire-collector interface, arcing and electrical transients, and entanglement hazards.

IEEE 1609.2-2013
Approved February 2013
The “IEEE Standard for Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments—Security Services for Applications and Management Messages” defines secure message formats and processing for use by Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments devices, including methods for securing WAVE management and application messages. It also describes administrative functions needed to support the core security functions.

The following standards are under development.

IEEE P2030.1
The “IEEE Guide for Electric-Sourced Transportation Infrastructure” provides guidelines for developers, manufacturers, transportation providers, and utilities that develop and support systems for electric and hybrid vehicles. The document also discusses the impact of such vehicles on systems for generating, transmitting, and distributing electric power.

IEEE P2030.1.1
The “IEEE Standard Technical Specifications of a DC Quick Charger for Use With Electric Vehicles” defines design requirements for safe and fast direct-current chargers.

IEEE P802.15.4p
The “IEEE Standard for Local and Metropolitan Area networks—Part 15.4: Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (LR-WPANs) Amendment: Physical Layer for Rail Communications and Control” specifies a physical layer (PHY) for IEEE 802.15.4, and any media access control (MAC) changes needed for the operation of equipment, including in the RF bands.
