IEEE Is Cited Most Often in New Patents

Report Finds More Than 100 000 U.S. Patents Drop IEEE's Name

5 August 2011

More patents cite IEEE than any other publisher, according to a report by 1790 Analytics, an intellectual property evaluation company.

The firm examined patents filed by 25 organizations that had been granted the highest number of patents from 1997 to 2010 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. It found that IEEE journals and conference proceedings received more than 127 000 patent citations—nearly three times the number of any other publisher.

The study showed that references in patents to IEEE papers increased by 515 percent between 1997 and 2010, and that patents that reference IEEE are in turn cited more often by subsequent patents than those that do not.
