More Patents Than Ever Cite IEEE Publications

IEEE unsurpassed in U.S. citations

8 August 2012

Patents issued in the United States are citing IEEE articles more often than ever before, according to a report by 1790 Analytics, an intellectual property evaluation company.

The firm examined patents filed by 25 organizations granted the highest number of patents from 1997 to 2011 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. It found that IEEE journals and conference proceedings received more than 154 000 citations—up from 127 000 since last year’s report for 1997 to 2010 was published.

The study showed that references in patents to IEEE papers increased by 545 percent between 1997 and 2011, and that 35 percent of all citations now reference IEEE publications.
