IEEE mourns the loss of the following members

Glenn E. Marihugh
Electrical engineer
Life Member, 79; died 2 April

Marihugh was an electrical engineer at several companies during his career, including Bell Labs and General Electric.

He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps for two years before joining Bell Labs, in Murray Hill, N.J. He left in 1961 for General Electric, in Syracuse, N.Y., as a design engineer. Marihugh retired from there and moved to his family’s farm in Ebson, Kan.

In addition to working on the farm, Marihugh enjoyed a number of hobbies, including gardening, square dancing, and playing the piano. He was also a ham radio operator.

Marihugh was a member of the IEEE Computer Society.

He received a bachelor’s degree in 1961 from the University of Kansas, Lawrence. Marihugh went on to earn a master’s degree in electrical engineering 1969 from Newark College of Engineering (now New Jersey Institute of Technology).

John Mandalakas
Founder of Mesta Electronics
Life Member, 78; died 15 April

Mandalakas founded Mesta Electronics, a manufacturer of high-tech power supply equipment, in North Huntingdon, Pa.

He began his career in 1961 as a semiconductor engineer at Westinghouse, in Youngwood, Pa. He later moved to the company’s transportation department, where he helped develop people movers, the moving sidewalks often found in airports.

In 1977 Mandalakas founded Mesta, named after a village in his native Chios, an island in Greece.

He was a member of the IEEE Industry Applications Society.

Mandalakas received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1961 from Ohio University, in Athens. He later earned a master’s degree in EE from Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh.

Ron Russell
Math teacher
Member, 46; died 3 May

Russell taught math at Anaconda High School, in Anaconda, Mont. He died in a skiing accident.

In 1988 he joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served four years as an electronics technician. He then began working as an electrical engineer at REC Advanced Silicon Materials, which supplies silane gas for semiconductor, photovoltaics, and glass manufacturers, in Moses Lake, Wash.

He later left the engineering field to become a math teacher at Powell County High School, in Deer Lodge, Mont. He began teaching at Anaconda earlier this year.

Russell earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1992 from Montana State University, in Bozeman.

William P. Rogers
Computer hardware engineer
Member, 74; died 30 May

Rogers was a computer hardware engineer and vice president of advanced technology at Telenex, a maker of computer components, in Moorestown, N.J.

He began his career in 1964 and worked for several engineering firms before joining Telenex in the 1980s. He retired in 1998.

In 2000 Rogers became an advisor for an after-school program that helped teach math and science concepts to inner-city students attending Urban Promise Academy, a high school in Camden, N.J.

Rogers received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1964 from Drexel University, in Philadelphia.

George R. “Russ” Pflasterer Jr.
Electrical engineer
Life Member, 86; died 9 August

Pflasterer was an electrical engineer at the Electric Power Research Institute, in Palo Alto, Calif.

He joined General Electric in 1950 as a control systems engineer in the company’s electrical and nuclear divisions. Pflasterer worked at the company’s facility in Schenectady, N.Y., before transferring in 1959 to its San Jose, Calif., location. He left there in 1992 to join the Electric Power Research Institute, where he worked in fossil power plant operations and maintenance, and retired in 2000.

From 1951 to 1953 he served in the Korean War as first lieutenant in the 304th U.S. Army Signal Corps Battalion.

Pflasterer was an avid hiker. In 1981, he trekked to the top of Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan.

He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from MIT.
