IEEE members are recognized with awards and new appointments

Three IEEE members received awards from the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Senior Member Bilal Akin [left] and Member Christopher Hinkle [center] received Junior Faculty Research awards. Akin, an assistant professor of electrical engineering, was recognized for his research in power electronics and adjustable-speed motor drives. Hinkle, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering, was honored for his work in advanced CMOS power devices, energy harvesting, and energy storage.

Fellow Babak Fahimi [right], a professor of electrical engineering, received the school’s Senior Faculty Research Award. He was cited for his work in electromechanical energy conversion, power electronics, and renewable energy systems. He invented a double-stator switched reluctance machine that is expected to replace permanent magnet AC motors in electric vehicles.


Senior Member Chester Kennedy has been named CEO of the International Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing Research, an R&D company in Orlando, Fla., focused on smart sensors.

Previously Kennedy was vice president and chief engineer at Lockheed Martin, an aerospace and defense company, also in Orlando.


Senior Member Matthew W. Urban received the R. Bruce Lindsay Award from the Acoustical Society of America. The annual award, named for the acoustics pioneer, is presented to an ASA member who is younger than 35 and has made significant advancements in theoretical or applied acoustics.

Urban was honored for contributions to the ultrasonic measurement of viscoelastic properties of tissues used for biomedical applications. When pressure is applied, such materials exhibit both viscous and elastic characteristics.

He is an associate professor of biomedical engineering at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, in Rochester, Minn. His work focuses on developing ultrasound methods to measure the stiffness and other mechanical properties of tissues.
