Senior Member Darren Dawson was appointed dean of the College of Engineering at Kansas State University, in Manhattan. He will assume his new position on 1 July.

Dawson is an engineering professor at the university, where his research focuses on motion and motor control, robotics, and mechanical systems.

He is a member of the IEEE Control Systems Society.

2011 IEEE president and Fellow Moshe Kam was appointed dean of the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Newark College of Engineering.

Currently he is head of the electrical and computer engineering department at Drexel University, in Philadelphia. He begins his new role at NJIT on 1 September.

Kam is a member of the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems, Antennas and Propagation, Circuits and Systems, Communications, Computational Intelligence, Control Systems, Engineering in Medicine and Biology, Industrial Electronics, Information Theory, Microwave Theory and Techniques, and Robotics and Automation societies.

Fellow Arogyaswami Joseph Paulraj received the 2014 Marconi Prize from the Marconi Society, in Mountain View, Calif. Each year, the society recognizes one or more scientists who advance communications and information technology for the social, economic, and cultural benefit of humanity. Paulraj was honored for his idea of using multiple antennas at both transmitting and receiving stations, which provides the basis for today’s high-speed Wi-Fi and 4G mobile systems.

He is cofounder of Beceem Communications, a developer of WiMax semiconductors for 4G systems, which was acquired in 2006 by Broadcom Corp., a semiconductor manufacturer in Irvine, Calif. Paulraj is now a senior advisor at the company.

He is a member of the IEEE Communications and Information Theory societies.

Member Daniel Sternlicht received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, presented last October by the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City (Fla.) Division. The award is given to civilian employees of the Navy for meritorious service to the Navy or the Marine Corps.

Sternlicht is the Panama City division’s manager of its Sensing Sciences Division. He was recognized for his contributions to undersea surveillance technologies, including advanced sensors and signal and information processing for unmanned maritime vehicles.

He is a member of the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society.

Fellow Chengshan Xiao was presented with the Humboldt Research Award by the German government’s Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The award recognizes researchers whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their disciplines.

Xiao was honored for contributions to wireless fading channel models, as well as to a pair of algorithms that have been implemented in cellular radios. The award includes financial support for Xiao to spend six to 12 months collaborating with wireless communications experts at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, in Germany.

He is a member of the IEEE Communications and Vehicular Technology societies.

The IEEE Photonics Society presented one of its members, IEEE Member Ertugrul Cubukcu, with its Young Investigator Award. The award is presented each year to a researcher for outstanding technical achievements in photonics prior to his or her 35th birthday. He was honored for “contributions to photonics beyond the diffraction limit with nanoantenna-based devices and sensors.”

Cubukcu, 34, is an assistant professor of material science and engineering and electrical and systems engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia. His research group explores nanoscale optoelectromechanical devices and sensors.
