IEEE Awards Board Seeks Members for 2011

If you’re looking for a rewarding volunteer activity, consider joining the IEEE Awards Board. The board’s Nominations and Appointments Committee is looking for people interested in the following positions on the 2011 IEEE Awards Board and its committees. To serve, you must be in good standing as an IEEE senior member or Fellow.

Chair, IEEE Awards Board:

  • Schedule and facilitate board meetings.
  • Serve as chair of the Awards Board Operating Committee.
  • Serve as member of the IEEE Medal of Honor Committee.
  • Serve as nonvoting member of the IEEE Foundation board of directors.
  • Attend the annual IEEE Honors Ceremony.

Vice Chair, IEEE Awards Board:

  • Attend all board meetings as a voting member.
  • In the absence or incapacity of the chair, the vice chair assumes the chair’s duties.
  • Serve as chair of the IEEE Awards Planning and Policy Committee.
  • Serve on the Awards Board Operating Committee.
  • Serve on the Technical Activities Board Awards and Recognition Committee.
  • Serve as chair of the IEEE Medal of Honor Committee.
  • Attend the annual IEEE Honors Ceremony.

Member-at-Large, IEEE Awards Board:

  • Attend board meetings as a voting member.
  • By mutual agreement with the Awards Board chair, perform short-term tasks.
  • Division and Region Directors who serve as Members-at-Large act as the liaison between the Awards Board and the Technical Activities and Member and Geographic Activities boards.
  • Report on their organizational units’ awards-related activities.

Chair, IEEE Awards Board Presentation and Publicity Committee

  • Attend Awards Board meetings as a voting member.
  • Recommend policies and procedures for presenting and publicizing IEEE awards.
  • Oversee the annual IEEE Honors Ceremony.
  • Serve on the Awards Board and Awards Board Operating Committee.

Chair, IEEE Awards Board Finance Committee:

  • Attend Awards Board meetings as a voting member.
  • Oversee the Awards Board budget.
  • Work with the Awards Board to prepare a budget to submit to the IEEE Finance Committee.
  • Serve on the IEEE Finance Committee and the Awards Board Operating Committee.

Chair, IEEE Medals Council:

  • Attend IEEE Awards Board meetings as a voting member.
  • Oversee the IEEE medal-selection committees.
  • Make recommendations as to whom the Awards Board should consider from among names put forth by the IEEE medal committees.

Chair, IEEE Recognitions Council

  • Attend IEEE Awards Board meetings as a voting member.
  • Oversee the recognition committees.
  • Make recommendations from among the nominees put forth by the councils that the Awards Board should consider for awards.

Chair, IEEE Technical Field Awards Council:

  • Attend IEEE Awards Board meetings as a voting member.
  • Oversee activities of the technical field awards-selection committees.
  • Recommend members from among nominees from the councils that the Awards Board should consider for awards.

Member, IEEE Institute-Level Award Committee:

  • Encourage nominations for IEEE institute-level awards.
  • Review nominations and recommend recipients for IEEE institute-level awards.

Anyone interested in one of the positions should e-mail a request to serve to awards@ieee.org by 1 March. Be sure to include the position you’re interested in, a biography of no more than one page, and a summary of your IEEE awards activities. Although any IEEE senior member or Fellow can apply, it is helpful if you have already served on a society, section, or region awards-selection committee or have received a major IEEE award yourself.
