Computer Society Expands E-Learning Program

Members can access free e-books and courses

13 May 2013

Members of the IEEE Computer Society now have access to more free e-learning resources. TechLeader Online, a new Web portal, offers professional development courses, certification programs, and more than 600 e-books to help members stay current with the latest advances in the field and even kick-start their careers.

The offerings are organized into 16 categories, called knowledge centers, which include computer programming, information technology, and management.

“The IEEE Computer Society has a strong commitment to members’ professional development,” says Violet Doan, the society’s membership director. “It offers a broad array of products and services that help technology professionals advance their careers. This portal alone is more than worth the cost of membership.”

BUILDING KNOWLEDGE

To access TechLeader Online, members must first log in to their IEEE Computer Society account. Then they can search the content using a keyword or phrase. Or they can browse the knowledge centers to find content relevant to their interests.

If they’d like to get certified in a programming language, they can click on the Visual Basic or Java knowledge centers. The Visual Basic center includes an introductory course and more than 70 e-books. To learn about Java, members can browse through more than 25 e-books that take on topics such as coding and developing Android applications. They can also take courses and practice tests to prepare for the Oracle Certified Associate or Java SE6 Programmer Certified Professional exams.

The IT Security center features courses that cover the basics, as well as more advanced ones designed to prepare IT professionals for the Certified Information Security Manager or Certified Information Security Auditor exams.

There’s also a knowledge center geared toward U.S. Department of Defense employees. The government requires all workers with access to DoD information systems to obtain a certification recognized by the International Standards Organization. The DoD knowledge center provides resources to help government employees earn certificates that meet that requirement, including the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) certificate and the Certified Information Systems Security Professional credential.

Looking to move up the company ladder? TechLeader Online has a number of resources to help computer professionals sharpen their soft skills. For example, the Leadership knowledge center has courses on cultivating innovation, leading successful teams, giving presentations, and offering constructive criticism. The Management center teaches how to build and maintain trust among employees and create a positive work environment.

All courses and certification exam practice tests are provided by Skillsoft, a company in Nashua, N.H., that specializes in e-learning programs. E-books are provided by Safari Books Online, a digital library with more than 2400 technical and business titles from Prentice Hall, Microsoft Press, and other academic publishers. The TechLeader Online portal provides free access to 600 of these books. Computer Society members can pay a discounted rate of US $389 to access the rest in the Safari Books Online collection.
