Drexel University, the third-largest private engineering college in the United States, is offering IEEE members a 10 percent discount on tuition for any of its online degree or certificate programs.
The Philadelphia school offers online master’s degree programs in computer science, electrical engineering, engineering management, information systems, and software engineering. The school also boasts an online two-year master’s program in business administration for part-time students. The tuition reduction is part of the ongoing IEEE Education Partners Program (IEEE-EPP), which seeks out discounted online degree and certification courses for members from universities and educational organizations.
Drexel’s programs are well regarded. Its part-time MBA programs were ranked 10th in the United States in the November 2007 edition of BusinessWeek, and U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges 2007” ranked the school’s information-systems curriculum first, calling the school’s online program “among the best in the country.”
SHORT TERMS According to Drexel, its online degree programs are geared toward working professionals, with the year’s academic work divided into relatively short 10-week quarters. This allows students to take a term off during a particularly busy time at work. The courses use text, audio, and video. Discussions between students and teachers are held via e-mail, message boards, and chat rooms, although some professors use a video connection.
Most of the online master’s programs require 45 credits (or 15 courses) to complete. The MBA program is slightly more involved, requiring 60 credits or 20 courses to earn a degree. Offered through the university’s LeBow College, the program allows students to choose from five concentrations: engineering management, entrepreneurship, finance, information systems strategy, and marketing.
Drexel also awards certificates in engineering management and in advanced studies in information science and technology. The certificate programs are generally shorter than their degree counterparts; between four and eight courses are required.
Tuition for the online master’s and certificate programs comes with a US $835-per-credit price tag, reduced to $752 per credit with the discount. The MBA program is $900 per credit, or $810 per credit after the reduction.
